Gigs: The Year 2007
2007 was a year in the right direction for me. Well, I hope it was. At the moment, I have a very good feeling about how things are going.
This would be the first post of the year, but I’d downplay it a bit and not bore anyone with how my life was in the previous year. We’ll save that for later.
One of the best things about moving to the UK is seeing all the bands I’d only hear about in the Philippines. Bands who would never visit our tiny little country. Bands who if visited wouldn’t even know that we understood English.
Sure, I missed a few bands such as Muse, Tool, and Foo Fighters, as I couldn’t see all since tickets were quite expensive and tickets for big bands sell out in minutes of release. Also, you have to plan attending the gig months before it actually happens which was not a problem at first but became an obstacle once I found work.
It seemed for every month after April (the month I arrived here), I have been to a gig.
In May, it was Funeral For A Friend which was a great show from one of my most liked bands. It was a great way to introduce me to gigs in the UK. Support by The Receiving End Of Sirens.
In June, it was Saosin at the smallest venue I have ever been to. Lights!Actions! provided support.
In July, Glassjaw’s one-off show at Brixton in the historic 7.7.7 gig. This was the best gig of the year. The best gig I’ve ever been too. I have no regrets swapping my Live Earth tickets for this.
For August, it was The Used at Carling Academy Islington which is the best venue ever. Support by Mute Math.
September was sort of unique as I attended two gigs. The first was Jared Leto’s 30 Seconds To Mars in Brixton Academy which I saw from the seating balcony area. Craziest line before entering a gig ever. Support by Circa Survive. The second gig was Coheed and Cambria again at Islington. One of the best gigs next to Glassjaw.
October had Motion City Soundtrack, a surprisingly fun gig as I was there mainly for one of the support bands which was Straylight Run. Other support was Zolof the Rock & Roll Destroyer. This was just a few days before I finally started work which made the experience more enjoyable.
In November, well, it was My Chemical Romance at The O2 Arena. Biggest gig I’ve been to so far and also the flashiest. There should have been another gig in November for Rockstar Taste Of Chaos but I was unable to go due to work.
For December, it was Funeral For A Friend again but this time in a smaller venue.
Whew! Quite a year indeed. So how is 2008 looking? Here’s a peek.
No gigs for January but there would be Kerrang! Tour with Coheed and Cambria and Circa Survive, then The Mars Volta and The Cure in March. Seems promising even though I already missed purchasing tickets for the Smashing Pumpkins. Now, if only I could throw in a British band, say Bloc Party or Arctic Monkeys, then I’d be all set. Actually, if I could see Thursday this 2008, I’d be all set for the whole year.
